Last week was technically the beginning of spring, but with 2-3 inches of snow yesterday, it hasn't quite felt like it at all. Still, with a little boredom and the perfect excuse to finally use the phrase "spring cleaning", I went through a box of my stuff in the basement ...and dug up my old SLR! I got this and a Nikon N6006 SLR body plus five lenses and two flashes for a grand sum of $100 at my first job. The previous communications director I guess hadn't endorsed this bag of camera goodies to whomever was to take her place. So when I discovered it sometime in the spring of '08, I offered to take it off the department's hands. The flashes were fried, the batteries dead, and with no one to educate me on this full manual beauty (vaguely remember handling my dad's Pentax SLR), the next few months or so were spent really just trying to figure out what the dials did with minimal manual reading. A couple rolls in, I gave up and reverted to my little point-and-shoot for the instant gratification I had become accustomed to. I still managed to post a few snapshots in the album slr stills on Facebook. About a year later, Abbie and I invested in the cheapest Nikon kit at the time, the D40. Since then, this guy has simply been relegated to a box of obsolete and useless junk—it was literally under my rollerblades and collection of pogs. Hopefully, when it actually feels like spring, I can go back to basics with some expired rolls I never got to use. Film, after all, slows you down a bit, forcing you to take a different, albeit deliberate and more calculated, approach to photography. The host of a webinar I've been watching this week said, "There's something about film that I can't describe with any other word than it has 'soul.'" Whatever it is, I hope I don't end up like this guy! (Just kidding, he has a pretty sweet thing going, and I wouldn't mind being his long-lost nephew.)
